I chose this book because I enjoyed that the text shares the culture of Cuba with such liveliness and colorful illustrations. The author and illustrators greatly reflected the Cuban culture through their images, word formation, and colors used in the book. The book also depicted several cultural traditions and norms, such as illustrating a woman sending her basket down the porch with a rope with money to purchase fruits and their New Year's tradition of purchasing 12 grapes to make 12 wishes for each month of the new year. Lastly, I like how they captured the feeling the main character and her Abuelo have when exchanging letters, giving one another "a hug made of words," as she described it. This piece of literature is helpful in embracing differences because it takes the reader into Cuba from the perspective of the main character, a little girl visiting her Abuelo in Cuba. Additionally, the literature helps the reader understand how it feels for her to leave her abuelo and nurture their long-distance relationship through letters. As many Americans must do with their families, thus providing a detailed image of the challenges many immigrant Americans face, regardless of where they came from.
